Rhyme Against Crime

Come see the winners of the 2008 Rhyme Against Crime Contest perform at the Feast of Lanterns on August 23 www.indyfeast.org

Rhyme Against Crime (RAC) is an annual rap contest for young people in Marion County.   The contest’s mission to help make our neighborhoods safe from gun and gang violence by sending an important message to young people in a music medium they enjoy.  The youth who enter the contest have the opportunity to express themselves in a positive manner and submit recorded entries of their work.  Those who enter must create an original rap song containing an anti-gun, anti-gang crime message. This message must be clearly stated in the lyrics/rhymes of the original piece and should incorporate the words, “gun crime hits home,” “hard time for gun crimes,” or a similar message. Music or backbeats are not required for entry into this contest.

This contest creates an opportunity for young people to engage in positive creative expression while also being active participants in the fight against gun and gang crime in their neighborhoods.

A panel of local judges reviews all the entries and chooses ten finalists.  The top ten are invited to record their songs in a professional studio with the grand prizewinner also winning a music video.

To celebrate the competition and showcase the winners, Indiana Project Neighborhoods hosts an event where the finalists perform, a CD is released to the public and the Grand Prize Winner is named.

The contest takes place during the first have of every year.
