What
is this?
Rhyme Against Crime is an exciting lyric and
rap contest for youth and adults presented by Indiana Project
Safe Neighborhoods. This contest is a step forward in making
our neighborhoods safe from gun violence and gang crimes. Young
people in the community will have the opportunity to express
themselves in a positive manner and submit their very own recorded
entries. Those who enter must create an original rap song
containing an anti-gun crime or anti-gang violence message. This
message must be clearly stated in the lyrics/rhymes of the original
piece and should incorporate the words, “gun crime hits home,” “hard
time for gun crimes,” “stop the gun violence” or similar message.
Music or backbeats are not required for entry into this contest.
Who developed the concept?
The Rhyme Against Crime Contest and associated events
are modeled after similar Project Safe Neighborhoods events in
Florida and North Carolina.
Why is Indiana Project Safe
Neighborhoods doing this?
In 2006,
Marion County saw a huge increase in violent crime and the homicide
rate was the one of the highest in Indianapolis’ history. This
contest creates an opportunity for young people to engage in
positive creative expression while also being active participants in
the fight against gun and gang crime in their neighborhoods.
In
addition to supporting the community, participating individuals and
organizations have an opportunity to interact and share their
messages with a large population of young people between the ages of
14 and 18.
Those
who partner with Indiana Project Safe Neighborhoods will receive
visibility on collateral materials and media associated with the
project.
What is the incentive for youth?
The winning song-writers will be able to record their songs in a
professional studio and perform in a concert. The grand prizewinner
also win the opportunity to star in their very own music video!
